am i sitting here. and another record powerball jackpot looming. so where are the luckiest stores in america? good evening and we begin tonight with a water world from colorado to the airlicarolinas. we're seeing families stranded on water logged porches, a car turned into a kind of a noah's arc and there in missouri what looks like a lake is actually a highway. 12 states are facing threats of floods tonight, so much rain they're measuring it not in inches but in foot. ginger zee tells us what's to come. >> reporter: that's the bank of the river there, and all these

houses underwater. swallowing neighborhoods whole. flash flooding in central and southern missouri. shutting down highway 44. dismantling roads from beneath. the floodgates erupting on the osage river. the relentless rains leaving camp grounds, and soccer fields, hardly identifiable. in waynesville, missouri, they are still searching for a woman swept away tuesday. her 4-year-old son already found dead. in the last seven days, parts of missouri have had more than 16 inches of rain -- the town of richland with at least 17 inches. the culprit -- this stationary front, complex after complex of heavy rain and storms have been riding along this thing. it's slow dancing around the southern plains and northern ozarks. unfortunately, north georgia is suffering a similar scene. >> i can't live here no more, i'm through. >> reporter: charles wittington's dog diesel, got stuck. right there, being rescued in the raging floods in pickens county. and this backhoe, caught in the

swirling muddy waters, had been brought in to clear the road -- in case there was flooding. now needing its own rescue. >> we just found out tonight that the community of wanesville in missouri, one of those hardest hit are letting some folks go back in to get things but the evacuation order right back in place. this is why, unfortunately i've got a map to show you that has a lot more rain on it and especially for that same area that got hit. you can see south of kansas city there and north of spring field back into parts of eastern kansas and of course the inundated southeast this summer getting more. >> the currents are tough and dangerous. thank you so much. now we're going to move next to cleveland where they were trying to eradicate a haunting memory. they dell olished that house where the women were held for a decade and one of those women came to bear witness. >> reporter: for more than a decade it served as prison.

but with crowds cheering in a little more than an hour, the cleveland house of horrors reduced to rubble. valiantly standing there watching, one of the women who thought they'd never get out of that house alive, michelle knight. for 11 years, ariel castro held knight, amanda berry, and gina dejesus hostage inside this home. there were vigils for amanda and gina, but not for michelle. at his sentencing hearing, castro himself said nobody even looked for her. today, knight is taking up the mantle of the missing releasing yellow balloons for the more than 85,000 people still not found. >> nobody was there for me when i was missing, and i want the people to know, including the mothers, that they can have strength, they can have hope, and their child will come back. >> reporter: michelle has described her fellow captive gina as her teammate and today gina's aunt was in the excavator, delivering the first blow to that house. >> knowing that it's coming down, there's closure for the

whole family. >> reporter: closure from the pain they endured for more than a decade, glimpses of that misery seen as the house came down. the pink room where they were restrained. a christmas tree in the attic where they were sometimes forced to sit for days in stifling heat. the physical reminders of all that pain now gone. tonight, diane, as you can see that's nothing but an empty lot left where that home once stood. officials tell me for the time being they will be planting grass and wild flowers there. as for ariel castro, he is serving that life sentence. he is in kol tear confinement 23 hours a day sitting in a 12 foot by 8 foot cell. >> thank you, alex. and next we move to the big news tonight about the snub heard around the world. president obama has cancelled an upcoming summit, a meeting with russian president putin.

it was to be next month. he did it right after russia gave nsa leaker asylum and tonight two of the most powerful leaders on the planet are shadow boxing as the world watches. here's jonathan karl. >> reporter: the last time these two got together the body language spoke louder than their words, sometimes grimacing, never geeing on much of anything. now a new low, not just for putin and obama, but for russia and the u.s. for the first time since the cold war, a u.s. president is cancelling a publicly announced meeting in russia. it's not just putin's decision to grant asylum to fugitive nsa leaker edward snowden. he has also defied the u.s. by selling heavy weapons to the syrian government as its accused of slaughtering its own people. the president vented about it last night with jay leno. >> there have been times where they slipped back into cold war thinking and a coal war mentality. what i say to president putin

is, that's the past. >> putin seems to be like one of those old school kgb guys. >> he headed up the kgb. >> reporter: today in a speech, the president alluded to the bigger crises he is confronting, the terror threats that has forced the closing of embassies throughout the middle east. . >> here's what those who would cowardly attack our civilians forget. the united states is never going to retreat from the world. >> reporter: the embassies will remain closed until at least the end of the week. as one senior official told me tonight, the threat is not over. diane? >> thank you. now we want to bring everyone up to date on the health of former george w. bush who was released from the hospital in dallas today one day after receiving a stent. the famously fit president was

told to take it easy for a day but he can resume a normal schedule tomorrow. now tonight an abc news exclusive, the lone survivor of a tragedy we all followed together is speaking out for the first time. those 19 young firefighters, the elite hot shot team were killed in june, trapped by the fast moving inferno in arizona. abc's chief investigative reporter brian ross sat down with the only member of that team to get out alive. >> reporter: as the wildfires spread across a rocky hillside in yarnell, arizona, there is was no immediate sense of impending danger. according to the first public account by the lone survivor, 21-year-old brendan mcdonald. >> everything seemed normal, not threatening, just a typical day going direct on a fire. >> reporter: all 20 members of a team called the gran it mountain hot shots specially trained to go into wildfires responded that fateful sunday morning in june.

>> that's when the superintendent and our captain asked me to be "the lookout." >> reporter: as lookout, he was stationed here, able to see both the fire and the other hot shots around a ridge. around 3:45 in the afternoon the winds that had been driving the fire away from the hot shots shifted dramatically and drove the fire toward them at a quarter of a mile a minute with flames 50 feet high trapping the team in a canyon. in his last radio call with them, mcdonald says his captain told him to get out. >> do you torment yourself and think i should have done this or this? >> there's nothing i could have done besides been on the hill with them. to have been with them and died in my boots with them. >> reporter: when the bodies of his 19 firefighters brothers were discovered, some were found still in their protective covers, others burned beyond recognition. >> i was still with our vehicles in one of the buggies.

gallons of radioactive water a day are pouring out of the fukushima power plant and into the sea. being called emergency there is reportedly plans to create a mile long ice wall to freeze the soil and stop the water from seeping out. we know countless items of debris have made their way from japan to u.s. shores, but is radioactive contamination reaching america, too? the canary in the coal mines says scientists is the blue fin tuna. it begins its journey in the waters off japan's coast racing all the way to america's west coast. stanford university researchers say they have found trace amounts of radioactive contamination in the tuna they tested, tuna caught here, contamination from fukushima. before you stop buying tuna, scientists say don't worry. the amount of contamination found is so low there is no danger in the fish we eat.

the new revolution that all this contaminated water is pouring into the sea is disturbing. that's why scientists here say they will keep on testing the fish we eat. also tonight the countdown is on to another big powerball drawing, the jackpot as soared to $425 million as americans line up to get their tickets. we asked abc's linsey davis to track down the place where lady luck has struck before and more than once. >> reporter: it's fitting that those itching with lottery fever would line up at this pharmacy. little silver family pharmacy in new jersey has a history of prescribing anxious lottery players with winning tickets. including a $70 million powerball winner in march of last year. i hear the winning ticket always

tonight there is news that the number of people who are out walking and killed by cars is on the rise. we were surprised when abc's david kerley told us why, told us the reason. >> reporter: it can happen in a blink. a car can't stop and a pedestrian dummy serves as a statement of an alarming problem. at just 35 miles per hour there is just a fraction of a second to react. a pedestrian is killed on our roads on average every two hours. like this jogger in charlotte, someone on a road is hurt every 8 minutes. this man suffered minor injuries, the driver who left the scene later arrested. most striking, half of pedestrian deaths involve alcohol. a third of the pedestrians
